Neal Stewart holds the Ivan Racheff Chair of Excellence in Plant Molecular Genetics and is a professor of plant sciences at the University of Tennessee. His interest and research in plant biotechnology began with his PhD studies at Virginia Tech and postdoctoral studies at the University of Georgia. His lab performs research in plant transformation and synthetic biology with applications in agriculture and the environment. Stewart’s current lab is most focused on bioenergy. He is author on more than 250 papers in scientific journals, 100 book chapters and other articles, and has authored/edited 7 books. He is an editor for the Plant Biotechnology Journal, BMC Biotechnology and Plant Cell Reports, and sits on 6 other editorial boards. He teaches courses in plant biotechnology and research ethics. He is a committee member of the National Academies National Research Council committee on Genetically Engineered Crops which will publish its report in May 2016. In 2015 he was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Stewart is currently a member of the American Society of Plant Biologists Science Policy Committee.
